i was anticipating flipping through the past performances last night, but this is a sorry bunch of cal-breds going at it today. maybe the BC hangover has hit the lower divisions here as well (not to mention the worker's comp. crisis..., but that's for another time). alas, i'll just make a few small plays on some price horses as there's not a single horse that i really love today.

r1: anziyan royalty. guess we have both golden bonus and first insight to beat here, but no matter, three year old 'royalty looks like a real up and comer for kid dollase. he finished well last time and the distance should be no problem at all; at 5/1 or so, i'll make a small play.

r3: very small play on new water. valentine dancer and shalini are deserving favorites, but i'll make a token wager on new water, who should simply get better as the distances increase. she's only a three year old, so she's got plenty of upside and i just like the way she's coming up to this race.

r5: icantgoforthat. for a down the hill stakes race, this event has surprisingly little speed signed on. 'that is a free runner and has run well down the dip before; if she can shake loose early, she may be tough to collar late. at 12/1 i'll bite, despite the presence of grant marty a wish, who could be the only fly in the ointment here.

r6: green team. as much as i'd like to root for some of the aged veterans, i'm backing up and comer green team, who got tagged late in his last, despite being the best horse in the race. no mistakes this time.

r7: nicole and ben. sure house of fortune just beat her and silent sighs has been the talk of the backstretch for a while, but i like this daughter of russian courage to outrun her odds here. her pedigree doesn't scream route, but her stride does and i just hope tyler can get her to relax a bit behind the speed brigade. if she resists the rating, you can probably tear up your tix at the half mile pole; if not, we got a shot at a big price.

r8: good meeting. i bet this horse last time out, and he finished like a good thing sprinting. now he stretches out on the turf for mullins and i think he can get a piece of this in here.

that's it; with the scratch of sky jack in the classic, i might make a small play red warrior, who will be a big price and has a puncher's chance.
